And by the way, the choice of entrees at the 20th reunion included "Orange Roughie Almondine, Eye of Round and Fettucine Alfredo." Linda MADE ME go.

Hodil/Hodel spelling and a reunion memory
Spelling Clarification for the Archives: According to the venerable TUSKY (does anyone/everyone remember the Tusky?!) that I cannot currently lay hands on, by way of the Hampton High School 20th Year Reunion Program that I can, our beloved farmstead has long been in the hands of the Hodil family. Linda, was it Bobby Hodil or his cousin, Danny Simon that made his way around our 1st grade classroom kissing the girls?

I think I have two of them. 'Tusky Remembers' was one of them. I will look for them tonight.
ReplyDeleteShelley, I added a title—feel free to edit it. Do you have any way to scan the reunion program? Anyone having hard copy artifacts should consider getting them scanned so they can be displayed here.
ReplyDeleteOn the Hodil/Hodel spelling and genealogy, it appears that there were two branches of the family and both spellings were used. Our branch was definitely Hodil.
ReplyDeleteWell, in 6th grade I was an "editor" of Tusky--which I had totally forgotten about until today! I'm glad the Hodil spelliing was cleared up..the two different spellings were driving me nuts (I was a copy editor before going to Wall St.), and I meant to look it up. But I would have checked Anywho, rather than an original source document such as Tusky!
ReplyDeleteHere is more information from this Descendants of Jacob Hodil page: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/h/o/d/Raymond-D-Hodil-jr/BOOK-0001/0011-0001.html
ReplyDeleteFrom these two Hodil men have come a long line of descendants, many of whom lived in or in the vicinity of Indiana Township. Jacob, whose descendents spell their name Hodil, was the father six sons and two daughters; while Fredrick whose descendents spell their name Hodel, was the father of four sons and two daughters, as far as it is known.
The name was pronounced as thought it was spelled Huddle and in fact it is still pronounced that way by a great many people, but the younger generations now use different pronunciations and spellings. In Jacobs will, it was spelled Hoeidle and signed Hodel. The will is dated July 20, 1859 and was recorded November 18, 1859. In Fredrick's will, the name is spelled Hodil, Hodel and is signed Hodel, dated September 22, 1858 and recorded February 8, 1859.
Poem by Bobby Hodil (2nd grade) in Tusky In Orbit 1962-63.
ReplyDeleteMy Pony
Carrot's is my pony's name
And he is very tame.
I can ride him fast.
Many things do we go past.
LOVE the poem and the "idle hoe." Did the Hoeidles stop farming or was old Jacob trying to prescribe something for the next generation?!
