Dan's wacky idea

I was planning a quick trip to NYC for later this month and started looking at the possibility of stopping through Pittsburgh. I'm attracted to that orienteering meet at Hartwood on April 18, plus the Pirates are in town that weekend.

So here is what I might do.
  • Arrive PIT Friday, April 17 at 3pm
  • See Pirates vs. Braves at PNC Park that night (7:05pm gametime)
  • Participate in orienteering meet at Hartwood Acres, April 18, 11am - 3pm
  • Depart PIT April 18, 6:30pm
If I do it, anyone who is in town who wants to join me for either or both events is more than welcome. Airfares are very cheap right now.

  1. So, the general back-and-forth these days has been, "Did you see....!" and, "what about...?" with a lot of attic ventures (virtual and real) in between.
The specific on this one was, "Did you see what Danny's Thinking About?!" and the response, "Amazing. I love these people!"

  2. Well, I booked the ticket, so this is definitely on. I want to stay for cheap in the vicinity and see there are a few Route 8 motels--Buskey's and two chain places. The latter both get terrible reviews for their 60s decor, but that could actually be a plus for my nostalgia tour. Anyone know anything about Buskey's?

  3. I'm scared for you, Dan! Buskey's has a long-standing weird joke-vibe with a dark twist along the lines of a certain motel in "Psycho!" But this is all adolescent hype, I THINK........!!! Go there if you dare.

  4. There was that Congress Inn on Route 8, aptly named as it was reputed to be a whorehouse.

  6. OK, I actually stayed at Buskeys the night before my first wedding. (We didn't have A/C and it was VERY hot that night.) Our relatives, the Crones, were staying across the street at the Holiday Inn (is that still there?) and my friends from Philly were staying at, yes, the Congress Inn. Shelley, I survived the night (though not, obviously, the marriage), so I guess the Psycho vibes weren't correct--though it sure does LOOK like the Bates Motel!

  7. Great, thanks for all the feedback. I decided to book at the Comfort Inn North, which is on the northwest side of the Route 8-PA Turnpike interchange. I don't know if it might have had a different name in the old days. Anyway, I will be checking in late so I wanted to make an online reservation. Buskey's isn't online. Also, there's free wifi at the Comfort Inn.

Linda, thanks for the invitation to visit your folks. I will try to do that. My plan is to get an early start Saturday morning to shoot photos of each house on the street, before going on to the orienteering event at the Hartwood parking lot off Middle Road.

By the way, that is nearby the new Central Elementary School. When did that school get built, and what is in our old school building?

I may have found some music for after the game Friday night. The late night clubs are all hard rock, but Moondog's in Blawnox has a blast from the past, Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen. Anybody remember "Hot Rod Lincoln"?

If there's a late show, I might be able to add that to my Friday night after the game and before the Comfort Inn.

That might be the next time I post. With luck, I should be able to upload pictures from the game and Moondog's before heading out on Saturday.

  8. The Comfort Inn is probably the best choice in that area. The Holiday Inn that Bob Friend (Pirates)owned is long gone. I have many memories of going to the Tastee Freeze (across from Buskeys) for root beer milkshakes with Bill Little. And going to the Burger King where Bill would put his french fries and lots of salt in bag and shake vigorously to his liking.

  9. Wasn't there a Howard Johnson's by the Rte. 8/Turnpike Intersection? That was the home of the Friday Night Fish Fry. We never went--God forbid my mother could get any of us to eat fish!--but I was always intrigued by the big sign featuring the Fish Fry.

  10. David, are you talking about the ice cream place in front of King's Funeral Home? That was the Dairy Bar and we always said they made their ice cream from suitably suspect ingredients. I remember one of my 1st trips as a driver--going the back way in my mom's Gremlin--to get soft ice cream sundaes.

  11. Shelley - Yes, the one in front of King's Funeral Home - thanks for getting the name right for me. We always went the back way out Middle Road.
Wendy - The Howard Johnson's motels and restaurants were always a part of our summer vacation trips. Reminisce Magazine had a nice story on HoJo's a while back. I always wanted to just go up to the one on Rt 8 and eat. But we never did.
