Central Elementary School 1962 - 1963

Central Elementary was one of three elementary schools in the Hampton Township School District. Poff and Wyland were the other two. In those early years, there were many young children on the street and Green Valley Drive was well represented at Central. Additionally, some of the families on Green Valley and Farmview sent their children to St. Mary's School.

In its second edition, Tusky In Orbit was the Central Elementary school yearbook for 1962-1963. Wendy Beale was one of the student editors. Student names were listed by their picture. If they held a class office, it was indicated with one or two asterisks (for the semester) and the first letters to indicate President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer or Student Council. The following grades (teacher name) and children from Green Valley Drive and nearby are listed as spelled:

6th Grade (Ruth Mucha) - Ann Ammons *P, Wendy Beale, Sue Harbur, Ricky Richards **T.

6th Grade (William Garber) - Linda Hartzell **S.

  1. Thanks for the great information, Davey. I didn't remember the class offices that I apparently held. I do remember a really bad poem I wrote, that referenced our first semester teacher going out on pregnancy leave. Something like this:

Mrs. xxx left us, because she was kind of ill
In came our new teacher and her name was Mrs. Gill

  2. Dan, you have a great memory! The yearbook had a long poem, which earlier included the following:

Mrs DeLuca came in to say,
It's time to watch some slides of Europe by the way.
    The owner is Danny Ruby.
Who wasn't here the year before.
He just came back from a Europe-Israel tour.

  3. The three Hampton elementary schools are still Wyland, Poff and Central. However, Central School is now located on Middle Road where John Lawrence's farm used to be, adjacent to Hartwood Acres. The old Central School is now the site of a retirement home.

  4. Does anyone remember the very unusual swings at the old Central School? They had some kind of horseshoe shaped arm bars that you pumped as you were swinging.

  5. Yes, I loved those Chinese Swings inspite of a "traumatic" event that took place in first or second grade... I think there were four swings all in a row and we use to divide into lines behind each one and wait for our turn. One day while swinging my dress went up in the back and EVERYONE saw my underwear. I replayed that event over and over in my mind for months, even years.
